Apple has unveiled the latest MacOS update at WWDC 2018, called Mojave, and although it stops short at the iOS/MacOS merger some had rumoured ahead of the event, it does come with a number of interesting additions. Those who have an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch model (iOS 10 or above) or a Mac computer (macOS Sierra 10.12 or above) with Safari installed can watch the WWDC 2018 keynote live stream on the official website.

A new Discover feed will be added to showcase curated apps that users might be interested in. But manual coding tweaks may need to be made for the macOS port, including different placement of buttons or menus. Ideally, it's best to hold out for the public betas or the full stale public release in the fall. These details were found within the release notes of the macOS 10.14 developer beta by AppleInsider. Its commercial name is macOS Mojave and the biggest novelty is the implementation of a dark theme in macOS. The new macOS features were spotted by developer Steve Troughton-Smith in a 30-second preview video hidden on the Apple servers. Aside from new categories of featured apps and games, the shopfront will be getting Microsoft's Office 365 and Adobe's Lightroom CC.

Mojave will be a free download later this September and will be compatible with Macs introduced in mid-2012 or later, plus 2010 and 2012 Mac Pros with Metal-capable GPUs. This is not a major surprise, but it is good news for users that want new features without upgrading to new hardware. A macOS desktop can get cluttered very soon and the new Stack feature will help users sort that out. Keep in mind that not all features are available to older devices. Apple CEO Tim Cook took to the stage to sum up Mojave as the OS which caters to professionals as well as everyday users.

While the target devices will continue to be on separate iOS and macOS operating systems, Apple's Xcode development software will automate much of the conversion process, enabling certain UI paradigms to be shifted - iOS long screen-press will become a macOS two-finger click, for example.

macOS Mojave may only be available in the first instance for those registered on Apple Developer Program but that doesn't mean the rest of us can't enjoy a small snippet of the experience right now.

While this is not a performance upgrade, we expect it to be one of the most talked about macOS updates in the coming months. Also, iOS 12 is all about the speed and reliability because iOS 11 was riddled with a lot of quirks.
