By Christopher Burns, BDN Staff •. Collins, who appeared on ABC's "This Week" and CNN's "State of the Union," said she would only back a judge who would show respect for settled law such as the Roe decision, which has always been anathema to conservatives.

Roe v. Wade, a landmark case for abortion rights, has been a major concern for some following the abrupt retirement of Justice Anthony Kennedy.

That tact can go a long way to find a justice who would rule against abortion rights without triggering widespread opposition.

"They were all saying, 'Don't do that.you shouldn't do that, '" he said during an interview that aired Sunday on Fox News.

"So I'm actually quite happy about it", he said.

"A candidate who would overturn Roe would not be acceptable", she said Sunday on ABC's This Week.

Trump said he will name his nominee for the court by next Monday.

Collins noted that she was in favor of moving forward with a nominee in the next couple months, so a new justice could be in place by the time the Supreme Court's next term begins in October.

Trump critics say he's been chipping away at empathy for migrants with rhetoric portraying them in blanket fashion as criminals. The new law allows a standby guardian's authority to immediately begin when a child is separated from a parent.

JCN also spent heavily during the final year of the Obama administration to oppose Chief Judge Merrick Garland, who was slated to fill the late Justice Antonin Scalia's seat.

Senate Republicans are promising a confirmation vote before the November midterm elections.

"This is a very different Supreme Court discussion because everyone in the Senate who is going to vote on this knows this could change the balance of power".

When asked on "State of the Union" whether she thought Justice Gorsuch would vote to overturn Roe v. Wade, Collins said no, adding that she believes Gorsuch, the co-author of a book on precedent, understands that precedent is essential to the US judicial system. "And that would indicate to me a failure to respect precedent, a fundamental tenet of our judicial system".

Collins, who fully supports abortion, said any justice who supports reversing Roe v. Wade is an "activist" justice who does not belong on the high court.
