Nawaz Sharif, Maryam provided 'B' class facilities at Rawalpindi jail


Sharif faces a 10 year prison sentence after being found guilty in absentia of corruption charges last week.

Nawaz and Maryam are expected to be shifted to Adiala jail in Rawalpindi, about 240km northwest of Lahore, to join Safdar in custody.

B Class prisoners in Pakistan get better facilities than regular inmates and can even get air-conditioners or television sets at their own expense.

Mr Sharif was disqualified by the Supreme Court past year in the Panama Papers case.

After the Supreme Court disqualified Sharif in July 2017 for not declaring a small source of income which he denied receiving, he toured the nuclear-armed country urging voters to protect the "sanctity of the vote".

By returning to Pakistan to challenge the court verdict that sent them to jail in a corruption case, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam have clinched a moral high ground just before the July 25 general elections.

Sharif and his party accused the military for his conviction.

Nawaz Sharif also wanted party leaders to highlight the government's plan to conduct the trial of the rest of the corruption references against him in Adiala jail for which the law ministry had already issued a notification.

Sharif was the 15th prime minister in Pakistan's 70-year history - roughly half of it under military rule - to be removed before completing a full term. There were no immediate reports of injuries. Pakistan People's Party, headed by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Pakistan Muslim League, led by Shezbaz Sharif are also a part of the elections.

While Sharif has been given 10 years of imprisonment, Maryam has been awarded eight years in jail.
