American college student goes missing while swimming in Israel

The program is based in Amman, Jordan, and Jones' group included seven United Kingdom students and two from West Virginia University.

A University of Kentucky student spending the summer in Jordan has gone missing after she was swept out to sea while swimming at a beach in Israel just days before she was scheduled to return home.

On Saturday night, Jones and two other students were swimming in the Mediterranean Sea. "The furthest I've known her to go is to stand and wade at the shore of the water and take pictures".

The body of a United Kingdom student who went missing in the Mediterranean Sea on Saturday has been found, according to The Times of Israel.

Jones was studying biology and Islamic studies at United Kingdom and spent part of the summer studying the Arabic language in the Middle East. A search-and-rescue effort that included divers was launched, but the young woman's body washed up in Tel Aviv early Monday.

Her mother told the News-Press that Jones was in the International Baccalaureate program at Dunbar High School in Fort Myers. As a high school sophomore won a regional championship in the 300-meter hurdles before suffering an ACL tear.

Israeli time and Jones said she was "in for the night", Thomas-Mora told the News-Press. "She's really mature for her age".

Our thoughts and prayers are with TeNiya, her family and the students and others impacted.

CIEE and United Kingdom officials are in contact with the other students in Tel Aviv, who are safe, and are arranging for them to travel back to Amman, Jordan as soon as possible. "We will do everything possible to provide whatever support is needed". Less than eight hours later she received a call from CIEE: Council On International Educational Exchange, which offered the study overseas program through the University of Kentucky. The university said she and three other students traveled to Tel Aviv for the weekend. "That's not like her", Davis said. A cousin tweeted recent photos of her on Sunday, urging anybody with information on her to get in touch.

"She's a decent swimmer", Thomas-Mora said, but added that Jones usually liked walking along the shore.

University officials are arranging for her mother and grandfather to travel to Israel.
