The sixth victim of the fire has not been formally identified yet.

Authorities arrested two people Sunday on suspicion of looting homes that had been evacuated in the fire.

An army of firefighters from across the country struggled in California on Monday to control 17 large-scale blazes that have reduced expensive homes to smouldering piles of rubble and turned tens of thousands of acres into ashen wastelands.

"Let the fire personnel make it safe before you go back", Leonard Moty, a county supervisor who evacuated the area, said.

By Saturday evening, the fire had grown to 83,800 acres and was only 5 percent contained, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

The Ferguson Fire in Mariposa County has burned 54,481 acres and is 30% contained. The home was gone, but Jinx was there, safely hiding in a bush on a hillside untouched by the flames that killed all the other vegetation. Crews worked throughout the night to reinforce containment lines, but the fire behavior's remained extreme, fire officials said.

Many of their staff also had to evacuate.

The death toll in California wildfires rose to seven as shaken survivors recounted the horror of watching fast-moving flames whip through neighbourhoods and devour their homes.

The worst blaze, in the U.S. state's north, has killed six people since Thursday, including a 70-year-old woman and her two great-grandchildren aged four and five. Two other towns with about 5,000 people were also under mandatory evacuation.

In those final minutes, unable to get to his wife and their great-grandchildren, Ed Bledsoe was able to get through on the phone. She says it's hard to believe.

On Saturday, it pushed southwest of Redding, the largest city in the region, toward the tiny communities of Ono, Igo and Gas Point.

Almost 1,000 buildings have been destroyed by the 99,000-acre (155 square mile) blaze, Cal Fire said.
