After a month of burning, the Ferguson Fire has singed 96,457 acres across three national forests and private land.
"What we're seeing in California right now is more destructive, larger fires burning at rates that we have historically never seen", Cal Fire spokesman Jonathan Cox said.
Meanwhile, firefighters made significant progress trying to tamp down a wildfire that threatened homes and has been raging for days south of Los Angeles, officials said Saturday. More information is expected to be released at a press conference late Monday evening. That compares to about 226,000 acres at this point a year ago.

The Mendocino Complex Fire, which includes the River Fire and the Ranch Fire, has scorched a total area of more than 344,890 acres. But most of that has been driven by the Ranch Fire, which has burned much more vigorously.

The River Fire started more than two weeks ago. Brian Hughes was killed on July 29 when he was struck by a falling tree.
Taliban Intensify Attacks on Afghan Forces
But details of the fighting were unclear as most of the city's telecoms masts were destroyed in fighting over recent days. Government radio and television was shut down and only Radio Shariat, a Taliban station, was broadcasting.
The deadliest wildfire, the Carr Fire, has left a total of eight people dead, including three firefighters.

Crews have been able to cut containment lines around 68% of the northern California fire, Cal Fire said.
