Surveillance for mosquito-borne diseases is being conducted by several agencies, including the MDHHS, the Departments of Natural Resources (MDNR) and Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) and local health departments.

Health officials have confirmed single cases of West Nile virus in Duval and Nassau counties, according to the Florida Department of Health. Again, no human cases have been identified.

Interior Health said it works closely with the B.C. Centre for Disease Control and Canadian Blood Services to monitor West Nile virus activity. Signs of the virus include flu-like symptoms, where the horse seems mildly anorexic and depressed. Wear long sleeves and long trousers sprayed with insect repellent such as DEET to keep biting insects away. Recommendations include: removing stagnant water sources; keeping animals inside during the bugs' feeding times, which are typically early in the morning and evening; and using mosquito repellents. Keep mosquitoes outside by having tightly-fitting screens on all of your windows and doors. The bugs become infected when they bite a bird that carries the virus, like ravens, crows or jays.

After it rains, you should tip and toss any standing water, where mosquitos may breed, including clogged gutters. If they're not, fix any broken screens as needed to keep the pests out of your house. If you've got a plastic swimming pool, empty it when it's not in use.

However, the organisation has insisted there is little risk to public health. "And it's the major problem with West Nile", he added.
