A tropical storm warning was in effect for Oahu, Maui and Hawaii counties, while a tropical storm watch was in effect for Kauai County.

On Saturday, winds on Maui were blowing about 11 miles per hour and the storm was expected to turn west, which would lessen the threat to the islands.

Waiakea Uka, located just south of Hilo on the Big Island, has picked up 1,177mm since Wednesday, while Piihonua picked up 1,135mm of rainfall through Saturday morning.

All tropical storm watches and warnings had been discontinued, but the CPHC warned that the storm would still dole out heavy rainfall to parts of the islands, and could produce flash flooding and landslides.

Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas one year ago Saturday, then stalled over the Gulf Coast as it drenched the region in rain for several days, causing devastating floods.

More than 1 100 people stayed in emergency shelters in the city on Friday, according to its mayor, Kirk Caldwell.

The outer bands of the hurricane dumped as much as 45 inches of rain on the mostly rural Big Island, the Weather Service said.

A once-powerful hurricane twisted and drifted away from Hawaii, leaving behind heavily saturated ground on the Big Island and many residents on other islands relieved it didn't wreak more havoc. Dozens of surfers were in the Pacific, looking to ride small waves. And civil defense officials on the Big Island said they were bracing for the possibility of more rain and flooding as well.

Forecasts predicted that Lane, which peaked as a Category 5 hurricane with top sustained winds of 160 miles per hour (260 kph) earlier in the week while far from Hawaii, would diminish into a tropical depression by early on Sunday. Like the Big Island, Maui experienced flooding and landslides.

The storm is being ripped apart by the chaotic wind flow around the mountain. The main town of Hilo, with 43,000 people, was flooded Friday with waist-high water.

Ahead of Lane, Hawaii residents had spent days stocking up on food, water, gasoline and batteries and boarding up their windows. Lane's threat came as Maui residents battled two brush fires, including one that caused evacuations in a resort area. Joggers ran around the park as a light rain fell with a bit of a breeze.

Those outages meant the water provider on Maui's west side was unable to pump, so officials at the Maui Electric utility urged conservation - particularly important because firefighters need supplies to put out the remaining flames.

In Waikiki, the man-made Ala Wai Canal was likely to flood if predicted rains arrive, Ray Alexander of the Army Corps of Engineers said.

"We wanted to ride it out", Shaw said.

The service says Lane's center will move dangerously close to some islands later Friday and Friday night.
