Six cases of West Nile reported in Lancaster County


"Know your risk and take action to prevent mosquito bites to protect yourself and your family against West Nile virus", said Dr. Greg Lakin, State Health Officer".

OPH is targeting areas where the county is seeing the disease-carrying mosquitoes and will continue to conduct adult mosquito control events.

Health officials advise residents to protect themselves against the virus by wearing mosquito repellent and trousers and long-sleeved shirts outdoors. The mosquitoes then infect the humans and animals they bite, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The person, whom authorities did not identify, became sick earlier in the month and tested positive for West Nile virus, the mosquito-transmitted virus that causes symptoms including fever, headaches, and muscle aches. Most people fully recover, but for some, it can develop into a severe illness that affects the central nervous system. "It's important for everyone to continue taking precautions like using insect repellent, wearing long sleeve shirts and trousers, and staying indoors between dusk and dawn".

Watch for health department alerts and warnings about mosquito disease outbreak. It is the state's first human case of West Nile virus since 2015. Birds and horses can also contract the virus.
