USA ex-senator Jon Kyl named as successor to McCain

Cindy McCain disclosed the choice Tuesday ahead of a news conference by Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, who will make the appointment. Jon Kyl to fill the Senate seat for the late Sen.

Kyl, though, would not commit Tuesday to staying beyond this term of Congress, saying, "I do know I will not seek this seat in 2020 nor any other office in the future".

In choosing Kyl, Ducey tapped a figure who is well-liked by both Trump's political team and McCain's family and allies. In other words, Kyl might serve just long enough to provide McConnell with a spare vote for confirming Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court (before his appointment, Kyl was leading the outside lobbying effort to secure Kavanaugh's confirmation) - and then step down, thereby allowing a newly reelected governor Ducey to put a younger, more ambitious conservative in his place.

"I wanted to pick the best possible person regardless of politics", Ducey said, as he explained his decision at a news conference in Arizona. "Kudos to Senator Kyl for his willingness to serve once again". John McCain, R-Ariz., on Thursday, Aug. 30, 2018, in Phoenix.

The GOP is hoping he'll be a more reliable partisan vote than McCain, whose opposition to a partial repeal of President Obama's health care law pitched the party into turmoil past year.

Ducey also says he hopes Kyl will serve longer than his commitment to fill the seat until January 2019.

The ex-senator said he was willing to serve through at least the end of the current Congress "to make sure that the business that is now ongoing is taken care of".

Republican Jon Kyl of Arizona, who served three terms in the Senate before retiring in 2012, was sworn in Wednesday to fill the seat left open by the death of Sen.

Representative Steny Hoyer, the No. 2 Democrat in the House, said given that the Arizona governor was "not going to appoint somebody who is going to vote with us, it's a pretty good appointment".
