Mr Morton, who joined Tesla on 6 August, resigned on 4 September. Musk responded with, "I mean it's legal, right?" Marijuana is legal for recreational use in the state of California, although it's still illegal federally.

Musk later brightened and said, "This may sound corny, but love is the answer".

Musk admitted - perhaps in a reference to his recent row after he branded British-born diver Vern Unsworth a "pedo" - that he had made mistakes on Twitter.

While it is, again, another chapter in the "wacky adventures" of Elon Musk, I suspect that this is going to be another faux pas in the coming days. They both giggled and Musk said, "That would be great". "If we were forever confined to Earth, that would be sad", Musk said.

"As a result, this caused me to reconsider my future".
