Kulsoom, the wife of Sharif, died Tuesday in London after a long battle with cancer. She further underwent multiple surgeries and around five chemotherapy sessions.

She would not take to politics again until a year ago, after her husband - now prime minister again - was disqualified by the Supreme Court from holding a public office.

Meanwhile, Shehbaz Sharif will leave for the United Kingdom on the next available flight to bring back the body of his sister-in-law.

Leaders from across the political spectrum in Pakistan sent in their best wishes for Kulsoom during the length of her illness.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar Tuesday expressed grief on the death of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz and condoled with the Sharif family. She was running for a by-election in her PML-N's stronghold of Lahore at the time.

"She was a courageous lady, and will be remembered for her struggle for democracy and for her love for the people of Pakistan", Mushahidullah Khan told Arab News.
