Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's fate was in doubt for almost a month after the first accusation against him. Susan Collins and Jeff Flake. She has not spoken directly about Kavanaugh, but tweeted about ending Supreme Court debate sessions: "Senate Democrats can delay, obstruct, resist no longer".

It would be a cruel irony if Manchin voted for Kavanaugh and helped save his nomination while a Republican, Murkowski, voted against him, but given that he is up for reelection in a state where Trump remains popular, it is a distinct possibility.

While speaking on the Senate floor Friday, the Kentucky senator called out Democrats for their partisanship and for not giving Kavanaugh the benefit of the doubt in the face of allegations against him.

Ultimately, it was Collins who put Kavanaugh on the brink of a lifetime appointment. Support from Ms Collins and Mr Manchin would give Kavanaugh at least 51 votes.

In the end, Collins and Murkowski diverged.

Kavanaugh's presumptive victory became clear when Collins made a dramatic speech from the Senate floor mid-afternoon Friday announcing she plans to vote yes on Kavanaugh.

Lankford said he will vote to confirm Kavanaugh based on the federal appeals court judge's record over decades, on seven FBI background checks, on "sixty-five ladies that have come forward that knew him from high school and college that said this is the Brett Kavanaugh that we knew, and it doesn't seem anything like all these accusations".

Murkowski chose the opposite path. You do not get to say you believe her, but not that part.

In a September 27 hearing at which Kavanaugh later testified, Ford said Kavanaugh restrained her on a bed, groped her over her clothes, tried to remove her clothing and a swimsuit underneath them, and clamped his hand over her mouth when she screamed.

When she finished, Collins received applause from the roughly two dozen GOP senators present. Her attorney Lisa Banks said Ford doesn't have any regrets about coming forward.

Susan Rice, the former national security adviser to President Barack Obama, volunteered herself on Twitter as a Democratic opponent to Collins in Maine.

"So as much as I think she's exhausted of being in this position of being such a deciding vote on so many issues, here we are again awaiting her 3:00 p.m. announcement of which way she's going to go", he added. Both were surrounded by colleagues from both parties after the vote.

Senators sat at their desks during Saturday's roll call, rising when it was their turn to vote. She was re-elected in 2016. Kavanaugh has denied all the accusations.

Lisa Banks, another attorney for Ford, said her client merely wanted to tell her story so that lawmakers could "make the best decision possible". "The allegations fail to meet the "more likely than not" standard", she said.

Neither team celebrated the final whistle but they did not seem too dissatisfied either. This is impressive for such an expansive system which commits so many players forward.
