20 killed in NY state vehicle crash


State police said that two vehicles were involved in the crash on Saturday afternoon in the town of Schoharie.

The limo, which was bringing guests to a wedding, failed to stop at an intersection, and sailed into the parking lot of a nearby Apple Barrel, where it struck an unoccupied vehicle and two pedestrians, police confirm.

At least 20 people were killed Saturday after two vehicles, including a stretch limousine, crashed in Upstate New York, authorities said.

It was the deadliest transportation accident since February 2009, when Colgan Air Flight 3407 crashed in Buffalo, New York, killing 50 people, Sumwalt said.

State Police said the 2001 Ford Excursion limousine barrelled down one roadway and passed through the T-intersection, crashing into another vehicle, an unoccupied 2015 Toyota Highlander, before landing in a shallow ravine beyond the road.

Prestige Limousine issued a statement Monday expressing condolences to victims' families and saying it was conducting "a detailed internal investigation", while also meeting with state and federal authorities, according to The New York Times. "We have used our drone this evening and our facial identification unit as well", he said Saturday evening.

NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt said that while some seats had belts, it was not clear if all of them did, nor whether anyone was wearing them.

In 2014, the latest year with available figures, crashes on the state's highways resulted in $808.1 million in hospitalization and emergency department charges, the Department of Health said on its website.
