According to Turkish police, al-Tubaigy was one of the 15 Saudis who had arrived in Istanbul on two planes and entered the consulate while Khashoggi was inside.

Trump rather clearly doesn't want to shake up the relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia, either through new sanctions or scaling back an arms deal.

"Turkish officials have said they possess evidence that the 15 Saudi agents flew into Istanbul on October 2, assassinated Mr. Khashoggi, dismembered his body with a bone saw they had brought for the objective, and flew out the same day", reported the Times, without giving the names of the officials reportedly cited.

Turkish police on Monday night undertook an eight-hour search at the consulate, taking away soil and DNA samples, although a search expected on Tuesday at the consul's residence has so far not taken place.

"In each of those meetings I stressed the importance of them conducting a complete investigation into the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi". A senior official told The Associated Press that investigators had found more evidence indicating that the journalist was killed there.

"There seems to be clear evidence that Khashoggi entered the Consulate and has never been seen since, the onus is on the Saudi authorities to reveal what happened to him from that point onwards", she said.

He resigned from the board of Sky this week, following Comcast's successful bid for the European satellite broadcaster. Musk retweeted the story to his 22.9 million Twitter followers, writing " Teslaquila coming soon".

These claims also come from CNN reports in which a source says Khashoggi died in a botched interrogation.

It said al-Otaibi can be heard on one tape saying during Khashoggi's torture: "Do this outside".

A spokeswoman for the Saudi Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the discussions.

Pompeo "also thanked the King for his commitment to supporting a thorough, transparent, and timely investigation of Khashoggi's disappearance", the statement read.

The Saudi heir apparent wields considerable power in the kingdom and is being held responsible by many outside for whatever happened to Khashoggi.

"We remain very troubled by the disappearance of prominent Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi".

On the day of Khashoggi's disappearance, several vehicles with Saudi diplomatic number plates were seen on video footage moving from the consulate to the residence.

The report by Yeni Safak adds to the ever-increasing pressure on Saudi Arabia to explain what happened to Khashoggi, who vanished October 2 while visiting the consulate to pick up paperwork he needed to get married. Khashoggi was a US resident who wrote columns for the Washington Post and he was critical of the Saudi government, calling for reforms.

Bin Salman was with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Saudi Arabia during that call.

But the theory was widely dismissed among Mr. Khashoggi's friends, human rights advocates and some on Capitol Hill, who noted that Saudi officials had denied his death for two weeks - including assertions by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman last week and the King himself on Monday.

Asked whether they said Khashoggi was alive or dead, Pompeo said: "They didn't talk about any of the facts".
