The University of Utah was also the scene of a deadly shooting nearly one year ago, when Austin Boutain fired five shots into a vehicle, killing 23-year-old worldwide student Chenwei Guo, a computer science major from China.

Kaitlin Felsted, a spokeswoman for the Utah Department of Corrections, said police didn't make parole officers aware of the complaint. He was found inside the church a short time later with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

University of Utah Police Chief Dale Brophy said his officers took reports on October 12 and October 13 from Lauren McCluskey regarding harassment, but he declined to provide details about those complaints or what actions police took.

"This news has shaken not only myself but our entire University of Utah athletics family to its core", Utah's director of athletics, Mark Harlan, said in a statement.

McCluskey was a senior track athlete studying communications at the U. According to the university's statement, police discovered McCluskey's body in a parked auto outside an on-campus residence hall Monday night. Her track teammates say they were blessed to have her.

Police searched for the suspect, Melvin Rowland, 37, and issued a campus lockdown that remained in effect until just before midnight.

"I kept the line open and in a few minutes, a young woman picked up the phone and said all of Lauren's things were on the ground", Jill went on. She was a star of track and field, and was memorialized at a vigil on campus Wednesday night.

A student who identified himself as Anthony said he was walking on campus Monday evening when he heard four to six quiet gunshots.

"Tonight is a night to think about Lauren and just come together and feel in various ways and honor her", McDonald said.

Rowland was a convicted felon on parole for forcible sexual abuse when police say he shot McCluskey, 21, to death Monday night in a University of Utah parking lot.

Other speakers at the vigil included University of Utah President Ruth Watkins, student body President Connor Morgan and Troy Champ, the pastor of Salt Lake City's Capital Church, which McCluskey attended.

So the rest, it doesn't interfere [with] me". "Everybody makes mistakes, I made a lot of mistakes". I'm not happy at all with more than that.

The prime suspect was her ex-boyfriend of one month, Melvin S. Rowland, although the police claimed it was he who "shot and killed" Lauren, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.

Police say Rowland and the victim had a "previous relationship".

The events occurred a year after a fatal shooting near campus shook the state's flagship university.

Rowland is described as a black male, 6 foot 3 inches tall, weighing 250 pounds and wearing a gray beanie, black trousers, white shoes and a white hoodie. He believes the university, too, will examine its police department for "where we may have had some errors and mistakes". "He was last seen on foot leaving NB from the medical towers".

Boutain pleaded guilty in September and was sentenced to life in prison.
