Attacks in Yemen target air base, port


According to the World Health Organization, almost 10,000 people have since been killed.

The Houthis, through their own television station, confirmed that more than 30 airstrikes had targeted the air base and other areas around the capital.

The appeal came as fighting intensified in the key rebel-held Red Sea port city of Hodeida, despite growing global pressure to end a conflict that has left the country on the brink of starvation.

The United Nations Children's Fund regional director says local Yemeni authorities are making it "impossible" for the delivery and distribution of much-needed humanitarian aid in Yemen and warned that impeding relief efforts could accelerate starvation conditions.

The airstrikes in Sanaa came days after a US call for an urgent halt to the Saudi-Iran proxy war in Yemen and the start of negotiations in November toward a political settlement of the conflict.

Despite overwhelming military superiority over the Iran-supported Houthi fighters, the Saudi-led coalition has been unable to dislodge the rebels for over three years now. He also said airstrikes by the Arab coalition, backed by the US, "must cease in all populated areas in Yemen".

Yemen's government said on Thursday it was ready to re-start peace talks with Houthi rebels.

The United States and Britain have called for an end to the conflict, raising pressure on Saudi Arabia as it faces a global outcry over the murder of prominent Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

"UN member states must end their deafening silence on Saudi Arabia and do their duty of scrutinising the cruelty in the kingdom in order to prevent further outrageous human rights violations in the country and in Yemen", Samah Hadid, Amnesty International's Middle East director of campaigns, said in a statement.

Yemen has been at war since March 2015, when Houthis occupied northern Yemen, forcing the government into exile. The conflict is seen as a proxy war between Riyadh and Tehran.
