Thiem, the world No 8 who on Friday had booked his place in this month's ATP Finals in London, was out of sorts and seemed rushed by the depth and power of Khachanov's groundstrokes.

Khachanov became the third different first-time victor of a Masters tournament this season - joining Juan Martin del Potro and John Isner - and will rise to a career-high ranking of 11th on Monday. The 22-year-old, 6ft 6in Russian, already the owner of two indoor hard court titles this year, moved one step away from the biggest title of his career, crushing his Austrian friend and practice partner in 70 one-sided minutes.

"I didn´t unfortunately. But I don´t want to talk about that".

"When you lose a close match like this you always have regrets", Federer, who remains one title shy of 100 career trophies, told the crowd, according to the Washington Post. "So all the credit to him".

Although Khachanov denied Djokovic, the opportunity of clinching his fourth Paris Masters title and his record-equalling 33rd, he will be consoled by the fact that he will become the World Number One on Monday, replacing Rafa Nadal, who pulled out of the tournament because of injury. And what more can I ask for?
