Congresswoman-elect Ilhan Omar, the first Somali-American elected to the U.S. Congress, says she wants to make the United States more welcoming to immigrants and refugees.

Rashida Tlaib, a social worker born in Detroit to Palestinian immigrant parents, won a House seat in a district where she ran unopposed by a Republican candidate.

"I'm going to speak truth to power", Tlaib told the Detroit Free Press on election night on Tuesday.

For Tlaib, Tuesday's election marks the second time she will have made history in recent years. Following her win in 2016, Omar said her political involvement had become more than "about me or the win or the loss".

Keith Ellison was the first Muslim to win a seat in Congress.

The other was Rashida Tlaib, of MI. Minnesota state data showed Omar winning by a large margin, and MI media reported that Tlaib had won. "What I defend is ideas", she said. After fleeing the country's civil war, she spent four years in a refugee camp before coming to the US when she was 14. With this victory, she will be the first Somali-American elected to U.S. Congress. She spent four years in Dadaab until her family was cleared to emigrate to the US.

"That said, Tlaib's election is seen as a glimmer of hope in a very dark chapter in the Palestinian people's history", Barahmeh added.
