Shark attack: Man dies in popular Aussie tourist spot

RACQ CQ Rescue in Australia assisted with the rescue of a man who had been mauled by a shark in Cid Bay - the third person to be attacked in the area in two months.

State Fisheries Minister Mark Furner insisted the industrial action would not affect moves to install signs warning people of sharks in Cid Harbour, with the local council and even police helping with efforts.

A crew member of Royal Automobile Club of Queensland, which provided the rescue helicopter that transported the bite victim, described the man's injuries as "absolutely horrific".

Tributes flowed for Daniel Christidis on Wednesday as the state government called a meeting for Friday to discuss how to manage sharks in the area, where there have been two other non fatal attacks in recent months.

When the man jumped off the board at some point to give a female friend her turn on it, he was attacked by a shark.

"When the man got off the paddle boat and into the water, he was bitten by the shark".

"His injuries and his reaction to those injures were so severe that unfortunately he (did) not survive shortly after his arrival at Mackay Base Hospital", he said.

The Whitsunday Islands region around Cid Harbour is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Australia, with more than 750,000 local and global visitors a year.

Sea World's director of marine sciences Trevor Long said our three most unsafe sharks all had different feeding patterns but there were similarities in the way they hunted their prey.

Less than a day earlier, 46-year-old Tasmanian tourist Justine Barwick suffered a major injury to her upper left thigh.

On September 20, a 12-year-old girl was left in a serious condition after a shark bit her on the leg.

"All the agencies are working together to ensure people are being warned in the area now - do not swim in Cid Harbour", he said.
