Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his condolences over the death of the 41st President of the Unites States George HW Bush, who died on Friday at the age of 94, in a statement published on the Kremlin website.

"Not merely for the years he spent as our 42st President, but for the more than 70 years he spent in devoted service to the country he loved - from a decorated Naval aviator who almost gave his life in World War II, to Commander-in-Chief of our Armed Forces, with plenty of posts along the way".

In April, he was admitted to a hospital intensive care unit with a blood infection, a week after the death of his wife of 73 years, Barbara.

"A new breeze is blowing and a world refreshed by freedom seems reborn", President Bush said.
