Trump claims Comey 'set a record' for lying to Congress

Comey is appearing for the interview after unsuccessfully fighting a subpoena in court.

Comey revealed that the initial counterintelligence investigation into Russia election meddling was opened on four individuals - but not Trump - to see if any of them were conspiring with the Russians to sway the elections.

Comey's testimony came during a six hour closed-door meeting with Republicans and Democrats on the committees in which he answered questions about the FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails, the Russian Federation counterintelligence investigation he launched before he was sacked from the FBI and the potential dismissal of special counsel Robert Mueller by Trump.

Comey (shown above left) has been a main person of interest since the beginning, for his involvement in a key investigation and his public comments. He also slammed the GOP congress for questioning him and Trump's attacks on the rule of law. Mueller took over the department's investigation when he was appointed in May 2017. The panel released a transcript of that questioning on Saturday. Comey had previously expressed displeasure over this idea, fearing "selective leaking" by Republicans. "All lies", Trump tweeted Sunday morning. It's a critical and legitimate part of the entire justice system in the United States, ' Comey said.

Republicans focused on whether the dossier was verified before the Page warrant was obtained.

The National Weather Service forecast indicated a light wintry mix could re-develop overnight and continue into Monday morning. Roads are already getting slick in many parts of the area, making driving conditions unsafe. "Ice is becoming a big problem".

In the second tweet minutes later, he blasted Friday's testimony specifically and said "this whole deal is a Rigged Fraud", presumably referring to the Russian Federation investigation into himself, and not describing the Republicans who were interrogating Comey. Strzok defiantly fought with angry Republican lawmakers in a riveting hearing that featured Strzok reading aloud from his sometimes-lewd texts, and Democrats and Republicans openly yelling at each other.

Peter Strzok, a key investigator in both Comey-directed probes, was sacked earlier this year for sending text messages critical of Trump to an Federal Bureau of Investigation lawyer he was having an affair with.

"This is a waste of time to start with", he said.

"The entire objective of this investigation is to cast aspersion on the real investigation, which is Mueller", Nadler told reporters outside Comey's testimony.

The lawmakers said in a statement that the transcripts cover the first of what is expected to be two days of hearings with Comey in the House of Representatives.

As the closed-session concluded, President Trump tweeted that "it is being reported that Leakin' James Comey was told by Department of Justice attorneys not to answer the most important questions". They're attempting to get this done before Democrats take control of the House at the beginning of the year.

Goodlatte said the transcript will be released to the public as soon as possible after the interview December 2.

"I'm not sure we needed to do this at all", Comey said after exiting his interview with the House Oversight and Judiciary Committees. But it also found there was no evidence that Comey's or the department's final conclusions were motivated by political bias toward either candidate.

Comey reiterated to lawmakers that it was the 2016 Papadopoulos encounter with a Russian intermediary in London that ignited the Russia investigation, rather than - as some Republicans have maintained - Democratic-funded opposition research compiled by a former British spy.
