A top Russian official says the nation's new strategic weapon has made any missile defenses useless.
The test launch was conducted by the combat crew of the Strategic Missile Forces formation from the Orenburg region in the Southern Urals and hit a conventional target at a test site in the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Far East, the Kremlin said.
"Starting from next year, a new intercontinental strategic system Avangard will enter service in the Russian Army and the first regiment in the Strategic Missile Troops will be deployed", he said.
"Listen to us now", he warned North Atlantic Treaty Organisation after unveiling several hypersonic, nuclear-capable weapons: the Kinzhal missile system, Sarmat ICBM, and the Avangard glide vehicle. Russian Federation claims the system is capable of speeds exceeding Mach 5 (five times the speed of sound), and that the missile can perform evasive maneuvers to avoid modern missile defense systems.

KeyCorp declined 2.5 percent to $14.35 as the yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 2.76 percent from 2.79 percent late Wednesday. ENERGY: Benchmark U.S. crude dropped 46 cents to $45.76 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
He said Avangard has been designed using new composite materials to withstand temperatures of up to 2,000 Celsius (3,632 Fahrenheit) resulting from a flight through the atmosphere at hypersonic speeds.
On Wednesday, Russia successfully carried out the launch of a liquid-fueled intercontinental-range ballistic missile (ICBM) carrying the Avangard hypersonic glide vehicle payload.
Putin announced an array of new weapons in March, including the Avangard, saying they could hit nearly any point in the world and evade a US-built missile shield.
A hypersonic glider is a warhead able to fly through the atmosphere at an exceptionally high speed.
Spacex halts launch of US military satellite due to winds
GPS III SV01 is the first of an entirely new, next generation GPS satellite created to modernize the GPS constellation. The satellite lifted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket at 8:51 a.m.
"It will be practically invulnerable", Putin said when he boasted of the Avangard during a March address to the Russian Parliament.
The test of Avangard comes amidst a new low in ties between the US and Russia, caused by numerous reasons - President Donald Trump's intent to establish a permanent military base in Poland, the conflict in Ukraine, and new USA sanctions against Russia in response to allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential elections.
"In the previous year, China has tested more hypersonic weapons than we have in a decade", said Michael Griffin, undersecretary of defense for research and engineering, as reported by a US Army website.
China and Russian Federation have significantly boosted their military ties in the past decade as both countries compete with the United States for regional and global influence.
Outstanding mobility makes the Avangard one of the hardest targets, Borisov explained: "There's nearly no missile that can shoot it down at such speeds".
