Trump Wrongly Says Democrats Are Responsible for Children’s Deaths at the Border

Friday morning, Trump tweeted that the United States "will be forced to close the Southern Border entirely if the Obstructionist Democrats do not give us the money to finish the Wall".

In a burst of early morning tweets, the president said the alternative to funding his controversial wall project would be total separation from Mexico, including making United States auto companies pull out their factories based on the other side of the frontier.

He said Trump had canceled his plans to travel to Florida for New Year's.

NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement, effective since New Year's Day in 1994, was created to increase trade among the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

The House and Senate adjourned Thursday after brief pro forma sessions and made plans to reconvene Monday, signaling that the partial shutdown will last through the new year.

The shutdown has been triggered by Trump's demands for U.S. taxpayers to stump up five billion United States dollars for the border wall, around a quarter of the total estimated price tag. "She can not be seen by her party as being weak on negotiating with Donald Trump".

On Twitter, Trump has blamed Democrats for the partial shutdown, which is now on its seventh day.

"We are far apart", White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told CBS on Friday, claiming of Democrats, "They've left the table all together".

Trump is not budging, having panned Democratic offers to keep money at current levels - $1.3 billion for border fencing, but not the wall.

Though Trump omitted details about what his version of shutting down the border would look like and whether he would be willing to go as far as closing ports of entry, such as worldwide bridges in Progreso, Pharr, Hidalgo, Mission and Donna, a Washington Post analysis of a border closure found there's "very little he can do to shut down the border that would stand up legally".

He labelled the Democrats "obstructionist" over their lasting standoff concerning the wall's construction.

"I've had members come to me saying they are returning holiday and Christmas presents they bought because they are anxious about paying rent", National Treasury Employees Union President Tony Reardon said in an interview Thursday.

"I think the president lives in this delusional world fed by Fox News and a couple of right-wing talking heads and does not connect actions with consequences", Mr. Connelly, a Virginia Democrat who serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said on CNN. "We must be diligent in protecting trade relations with our neighbors", Gonzalez said in the statement.

Trump had said during his campaign that Mexico would pay for his promised wall, but Mexico refuses to do so.

Democrats are likely to move a bill to fund the government late next week, while Republicans will take up Trump's argument that Democrats are weak on border security and make incoming Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., the issue. It was also not guaranteed that Trump would settle for that amount.
