'Hey Google': What are the major announcements from Google at CES 2019?

Samsung's 2019 range of Smart TVs to feature Google Assistant, allowing you to control your TV with voice commands from your Google Home.

Also at CES Google announced Interpreter Mode for Google Assistant, created to allow the service to operate as a dedicated translation device - running at a hotel check-in desk, for example, to display translations for travelers who don't speak the language. Hotel bookings are also limited to just United States right now.

The new interpretation tool will launch when users say phrases such as "Hey Google, be my French interpreter", and will give real time spoken and written translation to aid conversation, Google says.

This winter, Hyatt Regency in San Francisco and Dream Downtown in New York City will pilot the translation service.

Google also introduced a preview of Google Assistant Connect, which enables third-party device makers to more easily integrate the virtual assistant into their products.

This entire development, however, comes as no surprise to observers of last year's CES, when Google more or less declared war on Amazon's Alexa and other rivals in the voice assistant market.

Among the new Google Assistant devices that the search giant talks about in its official blog post, Lenovo's new Smart Clock is probably the most exciting. The new features include flight check-in, hotel bookings, and expanded locks screen access. About 21% of US adults said they owned a smart speaker, such as an Amazon Echo, Google Home or Apple HomePod.

The company revealed today that it plans to bring Google Assistant to its smart speakers later this year.
