St. Louis could get as much as a foot of snow by late Saturday, the National Weather Service said.

Winter storm warnings stretch from areas in Kansas to Rhode Island as Gia continues to drop snow across hundreds of miles. If St. Louis gets 15 inches or more of snow - there's about a 10% chance - it would be the city's second-greatest snowstorm of all time.

A snowstorm in the Midwest has created pandemonium on many Missouri highways on Saturday afternoon, causing almost 900 accidents and 1800 stranded motorists.

Forecasters said heavy snow could fall in mountain areas, such as Charlottesville and Staunton, Virginia.

The storm is dumping its heaviest snowfall on areas west of St. Louis, where about a foot and a half of snow was recorded, with more still falling on Saturday, Orrison said. Philadelphia is expected to receive a few inches of snow, but areas north of there are expected to be spared, Orrison said. Lighter snow is likely over far northern IL.

Authorities in Kansas and Missouri have reported at least five killed in crashes as a winter storm sweeps across the Midwest.

It moved from the Rockies into the Heartland Friday bringing blinding snow and treacherous driving to the region.

The storm moved into Kansas and Nebraska from the Rockies on Friday, then east into Missouri, Iowa, Illinois and IN, covering roads and making driving risky.

An additional inch or two of snow is expected through morning.

Another Missouri driver, Hope Wilson, 32, died after sliding sideways across US-24 and hitting a vehicle moving in the opposite direction.

More than 1,200 motorists in Missouri were stranded and there were four deaths on the roads, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said in a tweet on Saturday.

In Kansas, three people died Friday in traffic accidents, authorities said Saturday: A 62-year-old man in a vehicle that struck a barrier wall on the Kansas Turnpike, a semi-truck driver whose vehicle collided with another truck and a driver whose vehicle struck an oncoming vehicle and ran into a ditch.

At Lambert International Airport in St. Louis, most flights were canceled or delayed on Saturday.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam also declared a state of emergency Saturday night in order to allow the state to be better prepared to respond to the storm.
