Woman with baby dies after falling down NYC subway stairs

A mother carrying shopping bags, a stroller and her 1-year-old baby died on Monday after falling down a flight of stairs in a NY subway station, officials said.

It was not immediately clear whether the 22-year-old Ms Goodson had a medical issue that precipitated her death or whether she died from impact.

Her daughter, Rhylee, was found conscious, strapped in her pram, and was treated at the scene.

Goodson's death drew wide attention Tuesday.

Here's what you need to know.

Goodson's death remains under investigation and an autopsy will later determine her exact cause of death.

Malaysia Goodson was found unconscious and unresponsive at the bottom of the southbound 7th Avenue B, D and E station stairs just before 8 p.m. Officials told WNBC-TV that the stairs and the railing appeared to have been in good condition.

Police said she was clutching the stroller.

Malaysia Goodson entered a Manhattan subway station on Monday night pushing a stroller. He says family meant everything to her and she was very protective. "I don't know what to do". "She was my best friend". She was not seriously injured and is with family.

Goodson's Facebook page describes her as 'a mommy to a handsome little girl'.

Additionally, detectives say they did not find any marks on Goodson's body that would suggest she sustained any serious injuries from the fall.

The station where the accident occurred does not have an elevator and only has one escalator going up. This will be accomplished through the addition of up to 50 elevators over the next five years.
