Trump says Republicans are 'wasting their time' talking wall funding with Dems

"I personally think it's less than 50-50, but you have a lot of very good people on that board", Trump told the Wall Street Journal when asked about the likelihood that the newly formed committee could reach an adequate deal. "Speaker Pelosi has a problem with the word wall, she uses 'infrastructure.' That's cool with me, I'm fine with barrier".

Trump also indicated in another tweet the extent to which he may already be resigned to Congress not satisfying him on "the DESPERATELY needed WALL". Which is to say, they are trying to find a collecting of verbs and nouns that, when combined, will produce a "Schrödinger's wall".

Trump and the White House have proven to be an unpredictable force in the shutdown debate, mixing softer rhetoric about a multifaceted approach to border security with campaign-style bluster about the wall.

This is a significant change from just 10 days ago, when the Trump White House offered a three-year extension on DACA, in order to protect illegal immigrants from deportation actions while the Act made its way through the courts, in return for partial border wall funding.

Rather, Democrats approved a bill providing funds for more border patrol agents, drones, sensors and other equipment and measures.

Pelosi suggested she would be open to vehicle barriers called "Normandy fencing". "She can call it a wangdoodle, I don't care".

But while Pelosi appeared to rule out money for a "wall" earlier in the news conference, she expressed some openness to more enhanced fencing at the end.

But on Thursday, Trump reversed himself. "The Wall is getting done one way or the other!" he vowed. "I don't expect much coming out of this committee".

Trump's threat to unilaterally build the wall through an unprecedented use of emergency powers could upset congressional Republicans. But Pelosi's move could be part of a longer game that doesn't totally line up with reactions from either side of the aisle.

The high-stakes talks are taking place against the backdrop of another possible shutdown in mid-February - an outcome Trump's Republican allies in the Senate are especially eager to avoid.

The shutdown affected more than 800,000 federal workers in nine different departments, as well as several federal agencies.

Trump wants $5.7 billion for his proposed wall along the U.S. -Mexico border. Even Trump's Republican allies acknowledge he may only get a fraction of it.

Democrats also reportedly offered to provide funding to hire up to 1,000 additional customs officers, as well as additional homeland-security agents to combat drug smuggling.

Pelosi said that she'd leave it to House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) to arrange an intel briefing for the House. Then, a top Democrat, House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Nita Lowey, D-N.Y., acknowledged that "everything is on the table", including the border barriers demanded by Trump.
