Sudden outbreak of measles prompts emergency declaration, renews vaccination debate

Measles is still a big problem in other parts of the world, and travelers infected overseas can bring back the virus, causing periodic outbreaks.

If someone believes they have measles they should stay at home and avoid contact with other people, especially vulnerable individuals like babies or the elderly. If you are not sure if you are immune to measles, you can get a blood test to find out.

Before the measles vaccination program started in 1963, more than three million people got measles each year in the United States - of those, more than 400 died.
