Jussie Smollett Accused of Staging Attack, Police Say This Report is Unconfirmed

Smollett also made his first television appearance since the attack on Good Morning America on Thursday, where he emotionally detailed his experience, and the moment he realized there was a rope around his neck.

"I will never be the man that this did not happen to", he said.

The relative who was home Wednesday night says she heard a loud banging at the door, and that door came crashing down. "It's terrible. Doesn't get worse". "And this is just a friendly fight?" he asked. "So I turned around, and then I said, 'What the f**k did you just say to me?'"

She says she was patted down by an officer, and police asked her if she knows Smollett.

Additional segments of the interview will air later tonight on ABC's Nightline.

Smollett said the incident changed him forever. We live in a society where as a gay man you're somehow considered to be weak, and I'm not weak.

At first he refused to hand over his cellphone to police for forensic investigation. "My partner's number, my family's numbers, my castmates' numbers, my friends' numbers, my private emails, my songs".

ABC Chicago published an article on Thursday claiming that "multiple sources" had said detectives were investigating whether Smollett and two male persons of interest staged the attack because Smollett was being written off of Empire. Then it became a thing of, like, how can you doubt that? "I'm an advocate. I respect too much the people - who I am now, one of those people - who have been attacked in any way". "A lot more. And that says a lot about the place that we are in our country".

"I'm sorry, but I'm not going to do that", Smollett said on the morning show about turning his phone over.

"I've heard that it was a date gone bad, which I also resent that narrative", he said.

According to the report, both the New York Times and the Washington Post have rejected deals because the terms are too poor. Whether Apple's new subscription service will prove advantageous enough to attract major publishers remains to be seen.

Smollett told Roberts that he believes some have doubted his story because he said his attackers referenced Make America Great Again, President Donald Trump's campaign slogan.

Though a security camera on the street is set up in the vicinity of the Subway restaurant, it was pointed in a different direction than the alleged attack. The men began "tussling", and after a while, Smollett's attackers ran away.

The men, who are both of Nigerian descent, have appeared as extras on the show and their attorney, Gloria Schmidt, says they do both know Smollett. They called me a faggot, they called me a n****r. I noticed the rope and I started screaming. "There's a [bleep] rope around my neck!"

Smollett later gave detectives heavily redacted phone records that police have said are insufficient for a criminal investigation.

Smollett returned to public life on 2 February, where he told fans at a concert at Hollywood's Troubadour club that he had not fully healed yet and was still suffering from bruised ribs.
