House to query 60 Trump officials in obstruction probe

United States lawmakers will demand documents from Donald Trump's eldest son and a lifelong business associate as part of a wide-ranging investigation into claims of obstruction of justice and other abuses by the president, a leading Democrat said Sunday.

"We are going to initiate investigations into abuses of power, into corruption. and into obstruction of justice", Nadler said.

Nadler also said that officials who are now serving or who have previously worked in the White House and the Department of Justice for the administration will be asked to provide information to the committee.

"We will be issuing document requests to over 60 different people from the White House to the Department of Justice", Nadler said.

During the interview, Stephanopoulos asked Nadler if he believes Trump has obstructed justice.

It comes as Mr Trump attacked special counsel Robert Mueller's credibility on Saturday, disparaging former Attorney General Jeff Sessions and former FBI Director James Comey while Washington waits for Mr Mueller's report in the coming weeks.

Trump's campaign is being investigated by Special Counsel Robert Mueller for alleged collusion with Russian Federation to influence the 2016 election, and for possible obstruction of that probe.

He said the committee on Monday would release the list of people and organizations it would request documents from.

Speaking to ABC News' This Week on Sunday, the Democrat from NY and chair of the House Judiciary Committee laid out several examples of Trump's efforts to obstruct justice.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy accused House Democrats of prejudging Mr Trump as part of a query based purely on partisan politics. "He tried to protect Flynn from being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation".

Democrats are now in control of the House of Representatives, with Republicans holding the Senate.
