Officers were able to track the girls following a trail of wrappers from granola bars - leading them to believe the girls had "stocked up" before they went - as well as their boot marks.
Though the girls were dehydrated and cold, they were uninjured and "in good spirits", Honsal said.
Police authorities declared that two young sisters who had been uncounted for in Northern California for 44 hours were discovered a live after about two days of huge search operations.

Authorities found two young California sisters unharmed Sunday morning nearly 48 hours after they wandered away from their rural Humboldt County home, triggering a massive search that included helicopters, tracking dogs and help from law enforcement agencies across the region.
In all, the official search lasted 44 hours until the girls were found at 10:30 a.m. Sunday as the sheriff's office prepared for a press conference to provide updated information on the effort, KTVN reported.
The search for the missing girls involved over 21 agencies and more than 200 volunteers.
"We could not have had a better outcome than we've had this morning", Honsal said. "We found some granola bar wrappers, and we confirmed with the mum" that they were wrappers of granola bars she purchased", Fridley said.
