He isn't moving forward immediately with impeachment proceedings in the House because he is "trying to convince the public that there are 1,000 reasons to impeach the president - even if he can not prove a single one".

"This is a critical time for our nation, and we have a responsibility to investigate these matters and hold hearings for the public to have all the facts", Nadler said in a statement. However, around 58 percent of voters agree that Congress should investigate allegations about Trump's unethical and illegal behaviour.

"Investigating these threats to the rule of law is an obligation of Congress".

Should Trump face impeachment in the House, Nadler would oversee those proceedings.

In a statement Monday night, Sanders said: "Chairman Nadler and his fellow Democrats have embarked on this fishing expedition because they are terrified that their two-year false narrative of "Russia collusion" is crumbling".

"Democrats are harassing the President to distract from their radical agenda of making America a socialist country, killing babies after they're born, and pushing a "green new deal" that would destroy jobs and bankrupt America", she said.

The unusually strong statement further claimed that "the Democrats are not after the truth, they are after the president". There are also people connected to Russian interference in the 2016 campaign, including participants in a meeting at Trump Tower with a Russian lawyer before the election.

The expansive new probe could pave the way toward possible impeachment proceedings against Trump.

In the middle of Michael Cohen's private testimony to the House Intelligence Committee on Wednesday, CNN reported the former Trump fixer provided the panel with documents allegedly showing President Donald Trump's attorneys edited false statements that Cohen made to Congress in 2017 regarding efforts to build a Trump Tower in Moscow. Cobb says Mueller is a "very justice-oriented person".
