South Carolina lottery player claims $1.5 billion Mega Millions jackpot


The person who won $1.5 billion in a Mega Millions drawing a year ago has finally stepped forward to claim their prize over four months after the drawing.

The sole victor, who wishes to remain anonymous, submitted a claim for the prize today, according to SC lottery officials. A judge later ruled that she could stay anonymous.

After months of mystery, someone has finally won the $1.5 Billion Mega Millions US jackpot.

The newly minted billionaire has chosen to remain anonymous - meaning we'll likely never know their identity.

"The victor even allowed a fellow customer to make a Mega Millions lottery ticket purchase in front of the victor while in line at the store", the organisation said.

Kurland will act as the winner's spokesperson, according to the lottery news release, and could be in Columbia, S.C., for an upcoming news conference.

The payout climbed to $1.5 billion after three months and 25 draws passed without a ticket that matched all six numbers.

In South Carolina, state lawmakers have appropriated more than US$5.4 billion in lottery proceeds for education since its inception there in 2002.

Economic experts in SC decreased their revenue projections because of the holdup, the Post and Courierreported.

Also not surprising, the victor is taking the one-time cash payout of $877,784,124.

SC law allows lottery winners to elect not to be publicly identified.

If it had gone unclaimed, the money would have gone back to the 44 states where the tickets were purchased.

The numbers drawn on October 23 were 5, 28, 62, 65, 70 and Mega Ball 5.

Minnesota is one state where lottery winners must be identified.
