MySpace Says It Lost Years Of User-Uploaded Music

While the site may no longer have the draw it once did in the now crowded social media space, many users still depended on it as an archive for the music they loved in its heyday.

A few critics seem to believe the "accident" was not, in fact, a mistake, and that MySpace may have simply jettisoned its responsibility for so much dead content on its site when it redesigned its signature platform and moved servers in 2016. A statement from the social media site blamed a "server migration" for the loss of audio files belonging to over 14 million artists. "We apologise for the inconvenience and suggest that you retain your back up copies". "If you would like more information, please contact our Data Protection Officer, Dr. Jana Jentzsch at DPO@myspace.com".

At its height, Myspace was among the most viewed websites in the world, overtaking Google in June 2006 as the most visited in the US.

Andy Baio, who is one of the team behind Kicksarter, was one of the first to break the news over Twitter this weekend. This is not a case of data being temporary unavailable; MySpace has lost it, and - nearly unbelievably - has no backup. After being purchased by News Corporation and losing ground to emerging services like Facebook, its value and user base plummeted, leading to a joint purchase from Specific Media Group and Justin Timberlake in 2011.
