Google Announces 'Stadia' Game Streaming Service

Phil Harrison explained the vision for Stadia as "one place for all the games we play", with the intention to bring players, creators, and those who watch gaming-related content together in one place.

We are now less than 24 hours away from hearing what Google will deliver at its GDC keynote. You'll also be able to stream that exact game live on YouTube at the same time.

BTIG managing director Brandon Ross explained that Google's platform could set up a distribution battle between Microsoft, which owns the Xbox, Sony, which owns the PlayStation, Google and perhaps Amazon, which reportedly is working on its own video game service, as they race to lock down distribution of the most in-demand games. Stadia takes care of that by streaming to your existing hardware, but what about the software cost?

At launch, Stadia will support 4K at 60 FPS with HDR and Surround Sound.

Google has emphatically stated that there will be no box or traditional hardware platform of any kind, and that any USB controller can be used with Stadia. Google has unveiled a new digital gaming platform called Stadia which will stream data-rich games that have traditionally had to be either downloaded or purchased on disk. "In Stadia, the game client and server both remain on Google's backbone".

Google is launching its own game studio for Stadio too, called Stadia Games and Entertainment, led by video game producer Jade Raymond.

Raymond didn't have any news on upcoming Stadia games, but that won't be the studio's only responsibility. Google says it can take as little as five seconds to get playing.

No pricing was revealed at the event in San Francisco but the firm did say Stadia would launch in 2019 in the US, UK, Canada and Europe. He didn't reveal any further details about the hardware but affirms that something is under works.
