Potential to see Northern Lights this weekend across Great Lakes region


Remember a few years ago when the northern lights could be seen from the Blue Ridge Parkway? Since they are called the "Northern Lights", I will let you guess which direction to look, should we get our chance!

While the Lower 48 may glimpse some green light, the event is expected to be quite vivid over a majority of Alaska, where the epicenter of the aurora will be on impressive display in a ring atop the planet.

"However, the clearest skies are further east in Aberdeenshire, where cloud cover will be minimal".

Meanwhile, The New York Times is also reporting that Abrams is being considered as an early choice for running mate, with Sen. His office did not respond to a request for comment about whether he is working for Biden now.

Typically, people in the mainland USA will have to travel hundreds of miles to Alaska or Canada to catch an aurora.

Also known as the aurora borealis, the natural phenomenon is normally visible over Iceland or north of Norway. By nightfall here, the solar forecast is downgraded to a 5 Kp, which is the measure of magnetic activity ranging from zero to nine - the higher the number, the more likely the lights are visible. Because of the CME, NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a moderate geomagnetic storm watch.

The Northern Lights are created by disturbances in Earth's magnetosphere caused by a flow of particles from the Sun.

This means portions of Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.

It's predicted that the lights will show its stunning array of lights across the north and north-east of Scotland on this evening around 9pm, as a solar storm makes it's way to earth.

In the UK, The Met Office's Space account tweeted: "CME forecast to arrive late 23rd March following C5 flare from sunspot AR2736".

Clear, dark skies are most favourable, with little or no light pollution, so getting out of the towns and into the countryside is best for viewing - weather permitting, of course.

Variable amounts of cloud will build through the day but should break up after dark so there should be good clearer spells developing.
