The FBI and the DOJ will review Jussie Smollett case

Hall of Famer Charles Barkley had already weighed in on the Jussie Smollett case back in February after the Empire actor was accused of staging an attack on himself. Besides forfeiting his bond payment, Smollett also did community service, Magats said.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel told CNN's Wolf Blitzer that if Smollett were not an actor with influence, he would have been held to a different standard.

ABC Chicago reports that the Federal Bureau of Investigation is also "reviewing circumstances surrounding the dismissal of criminal charges against Jussie Smollett".

After learning Tuesday that prosecutors had dropped charges against Smollett, a furious Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the $14,700 bond payment that Smollett agreed to forfeit did not begin to reimburse the city for the costs of the investigation, which began January 29. He alleged that they shouted racist and homophobic slurs, poured bleach on him and wrapped a noose around his neck. Magats also said that prosecutors needed to focus their time on violent crimes in Chicago.

"As you know they have phone records of him talking to the brothers an hour before the attack, an hour after, and while they're in Africa", Stephanopoulos pressed.

Abel Osundairo (L), and his brother Ola Osundairo, the Nigerian brothers were arrested in connection with the alleged attack on "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett but were released after reportedly telling detectives Smollett paid them to stage the attack. "Jussie Smollett is neither one of those".

Emanuel said Chicago taxpayers "put a lot of resources" into the police investigation, because "we take the issue of a hate crime in our city" seriously.

Police have previously said they believe Smollett resorted to carrying out the fake attack after the threatening letter he sent to himself at his Chicago Fox studio two weeks prior did not garner enough attention.

"If he's found guilty on a Class 4 (felony) the likelihood was he was going to get some type of, perhaps, restitution, community service, not prison", she said. The evidence they uncovered pointed to a hoax perpetrated by Smollett.

The brothers testified before a grand jury, and Smollett was charged last month with filing a false police report about the attack. "They clearly could have proceeded with one count as they originally did in the felony complaint and then they made a decision to elevate this matter, to slice and dice this in every way possible and to charge him with 16 counts", she said.
