Alonso: I haven’t closed the door on F1

Alonso left F1 at the end of the 2018 season to pursue new challenges, but after just two races away he will return to the cockpit of a modern F1 auto to complete one and half days of tyre testing in Bahrain.

Fernando Alonso is to test for McLaren in Bahrain next week in his role as adviser to the team.

It means McLaren only need to dedicate half a day of the post-Spanish Grand Prix test to a young driver, allowing Sainz and Norris to split the remaining time between them.

"When I said bye bye a year ago, it was because this chapter is already complete and I achieved in F1 a lot more than what I dreamt of".

More than 130 people from Muslim ethnic group killed in Mali
Earlier he had reported the deaths of around 50 people, but warned the toll could rise because many people were unaccounted for. Clashes between the Dogon and the Fulani over access to land and water have become more frequent over the last few months.

Since departing Formula 1 full-time Alonso has continued preparations for the Indianapolis 500, raced in the World Endurance Championship, and also tested Toyota's Hilux that it competes with at Dakar.

"I am stopping Formula One because there are other bigger challenges outside Formula One than the ones I can see here".

I achieved a lot more in F1 than I dreamed of and I had great opportunities outside F1 to do something unprecedented. If something happened and a great opportunity arrives, I probably will consider [it]. "I don't close doors 100 percent to anything in the future".

Nevertheless, Sainz was happy with how his Qualifying session went about, and for the first time in 2019 both McLaren drivers made it into the top ten shootout - Lando Norris joined Sainz in Q3 - which he feels the team should be proud about.

Alonso will drive all day on Tuesday, and share the duties with Sainz on Wednesday, running a second McLaren to test Pirelli tyres.

"I guess they thought it is a good opportunity for me to try the vehicle but not take the driving time of the other drivers", Alonso added.

"Honestly I'm not missing [F1] too much at the moment as I've been very busy", he said. "It might be different if I was sitting at home on the sofa".
