Former Prosecutor Rips Cook County Officials for Giving Jussie Smollett a ‘Kiss’

Smollett, who is black and gay, ignited a firestorm on social media by telling police on January 29 that two apparent supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump struck him, put a noose around his neck and poured bleach over him. He also said the attack had been homophobic and racist in nature.

The actor has maintained his innocence, and insists that the attack really did occur. Smollett said that masked attackers hit him and screamed "MAGA country" around 2 a.m. on a sub-zero morning in Chicago. She did not address the ($10,000) bond Cook county had retained from Smollett, or why prosecutors saw fit to mention the actor's volunteer service. It is an embarrassment to our Nation!'

After the city delivered a letter to Smollett's legal team seeking $130,000 from the actor, Smollett's lawyers demanded an apology from Emanuel and Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson for "dragging an innocent man's character through the mud".

While the detective files cover much of what was already publicly known about the investigation, they shed light on the moves that police and prosecutors made behind the scenes to interview witnesses in front of a grand jury amid the media frenzy over the case.

The teams are to play one more time before the playoffs, as the battle for post-season position comes down to the wire. What likely had them so upset was a call Kogut made with 4.4 seconds left in overtime and the Warriors behind 130-127.

Emanuel is a frequent critic of the president, who said this week he'd have federal authorities look into the tangled Smollett case. The mayor said the city would seek to recoup the money its Police Department spent investigating the actor's claims.

"The police department is saying 'We had enough evidence, ' the prosecution is saying, 'He's not exonerated, we believed in our case, ' and Jussie's saying, 'I did nothing wrong, I told the truth.' So what the heck happened?" she asked.

The brothers have not spoken about the case since police said they confessed to being paid to stage the attack.

Cook county prosecutors abruptly announced they would not prosecute Smollett.

Tchen said her "sole activity" was to put the prosecutor in touch with "an alleged victim's family".
