Jennifer Kupcho made history on Saturday as she completed a wire-to-wire victory at the inaugural Augusta National Women's Amateur courtesy of a remarkable back-nine rally.

Now on a sports scholarship at Arizona State University, on a golf programme that has produced the likes of Paul Casey and Phil Mickelson in the past, Royal County Down member Mehaffey will tee off at 2 o'clock trailing leader and World No. 1 amateur Jennifer Kupcho by six shots. She three-putted the 10th to fall two behind, and sat on a bench at the 11th tee to gather herself.

The seesaw battle escalated with Fassi dropping a birdie at 14 and Kupcho again answering at 15. The iconic par-3 16th changed everything. Fassi, meanwhile, left herself an incredibly hard second shot and three-putted the tricky green to bogey the hole.

England's Alice Hewson carded a level-par 72 to finish in joint-10th place with American Sierra Brooks (76), while her fellow Curtis Cup star Olivia Mehaffey of Northern Ireland finished back in joint-23rd after a 76.

"Lost my confidence a little bit", she said.

Kupcho, a senior at Wake Forest, closed with a 5-under 67, playing the final six holes in 5 under. She narrowly cleared the rock-framed creek on the par-3 eighth and chipped poorly for another bogey, and she had to make a 4-footer on the par-4 ninth to avoid another dropped shot. Sorenstam and her daughter walked with the final group. She was hitting great shots.

"I had my caddie there with me the first time I played so we had fun and he knows what he is doing", said Kupcho, who used the same caddie Brian Murphy when she played Augusta as a guest.

Despite that, Yuen said prior to the tournament that she felt "close" to being back to her best in a press release.

Kupcho has played before big crowds at the U.S. Women's Open.

The club announced the tournament past year to promote women's golf and serve as an appetizer for its biggest event, The Masters, next week.

Women's world amateur number one Kupcho, the reigning United States college champion, and Fassi, last year's U.S. women's college golfer of the year, staged a dramatic duel in a historic moment.

Kupcho hopes the rest of it will look familiar.

"It started to go away, and I was able to see", she said.

"I think it's going to have a great effect around the world".
