Dominican police have been communicating with the US embassy and sent fingerprints from both bodies for identification.

The National Police of the Dominican Republic said in a statement that "the dead bodies of a man and a woman with characteristics similar to the American couple" had been found. Fisherman told investigators that they heard a "rumble" coming from the Las Americas Highway early on March 27.

Orlando Moore and Portia Ravenelle were supposed to return to NY from the Dominican Republic on March 27, said Moore's half-sister, Lashay Turner, who said she reported him missing two days later after the couple didn't return.

A woman matching Ravenelle's description survived the crash but succumbed to her injuries six days later, CBS News reports. A man's body with a tattoo matching that of Moore's was later found.

Frank Felix Duran Mejia was cited in a Pix11 report as saying that two bodies that have been found likely belong to the missing couple.

Authorities said earlier Tuesday there is no evidence of foul play in the disappearance of the couple, who were vacationing in the Caribbean country. A vehicle, believed to be the couple's rental auto, is underwater nearby but divers have been unable to recover it because of the weather.

Turner said that the pair had a rental auto in the Dominican Republic and the vehicle is also missing.
