See Julian Assange being dragged out of Ecuadorean Embassy by UK Police

A police vehicle parked outside the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, after WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was arrested by officers from the Metropolitan Police and taken into custody Thursday April 11, 2019. The near one-minute clip showed an agitated, frail-looking man with white hair and a white beard escorted by the police.

WikiLeaks angered Washington by publishing hundreds of thousands of secret USA diplomatic cables that laid bare often highly critical US appraisals of world leaders from Russian President Vladimir Putin to members of the Saudi royal family.

"For six years and 10 months, the Ecuadorian people have protected the human rights of Mr Assange and have provided for his everyday needs at the facilities of our Embassy in London".

He has faced court in London, where he was found guilty of breaching bail in 2012.

Assange has denied the allegations, but said he fears being handed over to the United States should he be sent to Sweden.

Mr Assange refused to leave the embassy, fearing arrest and extradition to the United States for releasing classified military and diplomatic documents through his investigative journalism operation, WikiLeaks.

"Powerful actors, including Central Intelligence Agency, are engaged in a sophisticated effort to de-humanise, de-legitimize and imprison him", said in a tweet over a photo of Assange's smiling face.

But WikiLeaks said he had acted illegally in terminating Assange's political asylum "in violation of worldwide law".

WikiLeaks said last week it had been told by two senior Ecuadorian officials that Mr Assange would be expelled from the embassy imminently.

London police said Mr Assange was arrested moments after Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno said on Twitter that the country had withdrawn his diplomatic asylum.
